Mould fruiting bodies, light micrograph. Black mould (Rhizopus nigricans) fruiting bodies (top and upper right) liberating spores. When this fungus reaches the surface of the substrate in which it is growing, it puts out root-like hyphae (rhizoids, bottom). These have produced two stalks (sporangiophores), swelling up at the top to form a sporangium (fruiting body) containing the spores.
