Mould fruiting bodies, light micrograph. Black mould (Rhizopus nigricans) fruiting bodies (top and upper right) liberating spores. When this fungus reaches the surface of the substrate in which it is growing, it puts out root-like hyphae (rhizoids, bottom). These have produced two stalks (sporangiophores), swelling up at the top to form a sporangium (fruiting body) containing the spores. At the top and upper right corners of the photo, we can observe the fruiting bodies releasing spores into their surroundings. As this fungus reaches the surface of its growing substrate, it extends root-like hyphae called rhizoids towards it. In this image, these rhizoids are visible at the bottom section. From these rhizoids emerge two stalks known as sporangiophores that swell up at their tops to form sporangia or fruiting bodies containing spores.
