Hooke on Hevelius, 1674 C014 / 5155

Hooke on Hevelius. Title page from Some Animadversions on the First Part of Hevelius (1674) by English scientist Robert Hooke (1635-1703). This work was a criticism of a work a year earlier (Machina Coelestis, 1673) by the Polish astronomer Johannes Hevelius (1611-1687), where Hevelius described his observatory. This title page refers to Hevelius as honorable, learned and deservedly famous and his position as Consul of Danzig. It also refers to Hookes fellowship of the Royal Society, and his position as Gresham Professor of Geometry. This work was produced for the Royal Society by London publisher John Martyn
