Hooke on Hevelius, 1674 C014 / 5155

Hooke on Hevelius. Title page from Some Animadversions on the First Part of Hevelius (1674) by English scientist Robert Hooke (1635-1703). This work was a criticism of a work a year earlier (Machina Coelestis, 1673) by the Polish astronomer Johannes Hevelius (1611-1687), where Hevelius described his observatory. This title page refers to Hevelius as honorable, learned and deservedly famous and his position as Consul of Danzig. It also refers to Hookes fellowship of the Royal Society, and his position as Gresham Professor of Geometry. This work was produced for the Royal Society by London publisher John Martyn

Hooke on Hevelius, 1674 - A Critique of Astronomical Observations

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print showcases the title page from Robert Hooke's renowned work, "Some Animadversions on the First Part of Hevelius" published in 1674. In this groundbreaking publication, English scientist Hooke critically examines the earlier work of Polish astronomer Johannes Hevelius and his description of his observatory in "Machina Coelestis" (1673). The title page pays homage to Hevelius as an honorable, learned, and deservedly famous figure who held the esteemed position of Consul of Danzig. It also highlights Hooke's own accomplishments as a fellow of the prestigious Royal Society and Gresham Professor of Geometry. Commissioned by London publisher John Martyn for the Royal Society, this historical document sheds light on a pivotal moment in astronomical research during the 17th century. The monochrome print captures not only the physicality but also the intellectual depth contained within its printed text. Hooke's critical response to Hevelius' work marks an important milestone in scientific discourse, revealing both collaboration and competition among scientists and astronomers at that time.
