EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate and detailed artwork from Juan Valverde de Amuscos' renowned textbook, "Anatomia del Corpo Humano" (Anatomy of the Human Body), published in 1560. The monochrome illustration provides a glimpse into the fascinating world of human biology and anatomy during the 16th century. Fig. I presents a striking view of the spine, captured from its left side, revealing its complex structure and interlocking vertebrae. Moving on to Figs. II, we are presented with both front (upper) and back (lower) views of the sacrum - a fusion of vertebrae at the base of our spine that plays a crucial role in supporting our body. In Fig. III, we encounter another intriguing bone known as coccyx - commonly referred to as our tailbone. As we explore further, Figs. IIII showcase side, back, and front views of scapula or shoulder bone - an essential component for arm movement. Figures V through VIII introduce us to various bones found within our upper limbs: clavicle or collar bone (V), humerus (VI), radius (VII), ulna (VIIII). These illustrations beautifully depict their distinct shapes and connections within our arms. Lastly, Fig. VIII offers us insight into the intricate bones present in our hands while Fig X focuses on those found in our feet – metatarsals and phalanges – highlighting their importance for mobility. This historical image not only serves as an artistic masterpiece but also represents a significant milestone in understanding human anatomy throughout history thanks to Juan Valverde de Amusco's groundbreaking work.
