Born in 1628 and passing away in 1694, Malpighi was a physician by profession and graduated from Bologna in 1653. However, it was his observations through a microscope that truly revolutionized our understanding of the human body. Malpighi's pioneering work included unveiling the mechanism for air transfer into the blood within lungs and being the first to observe capillary blood vessels. His remarkable contributions were honored with various anatomical structures named after him, such as Malpighian corpuscles found in both spleen and kidney, as well as the Malpighian layer of skin. Additionally, he discovered the excretory organs of insects known as Malpighian tubules. Throughout his illustrious career filled with research and lecturing, Marcello Malpighi spent his final three years serving as Pope Innocent XII's private physician.
