Brain cancer, DTI and 3D CT scans C016 / 6414
Brain cancer. Coloured composite image of diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) scans of the brains, and 3D computed tomography (CT) scans of the skulls, of two 35 year old patients. The patient at left is healthy, the one at right has a glioblastoma (dark area at left). The colours within the brain show the orientation of the white matter nerve fibres. Nerve fibres running right and left are red, those running front and back are blue, and those running interior and exterior are green. A glioblastoma is a particularly malignant brain cancer that arises from the supporting glial cells in the brain. Treatment is with a combination of surgery and radiotherapy, but the prognosis is poor

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the stark contrast between a healthy brain and one afflicted by the aggressive disease of glioblastoma. Two 35-year-old patients are depicted side by side, with the patient on the left displaying a normal brain while the one on the right reveals a dark area indicative of a malignant tumor. The intricate details within these scans are brought to life through vibrant colors that represent different orientations of white matter nerve fibers. Red signifies nerves running right and left, blue represents those running front and back, and green symbolizes nerves running interior and exterior. Glioblastoma is an exceptionally malignant form of brain cancer originating from glial cells in the brain. Although treatment typically involves surgery combined with radiotherapy, prognosis for this condition remains grim. This powerful image serves as a reminder of both the fragility and complexity of our bodies. It highlights how medical advancements such as diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and three-dimensional computed tomography (CT) scans play crucial roles in diagnosing disorders like glioblastoma. Through comparing these two contrasting brains, we gain insight into what it means to be healthy versus unhealthy. The visual impact encourages us to appreciate our own well-being while also recognizing the challenges faced by those battling such devastating diseases.
