EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph depicts the enigmatic ruins of Ollantaytambo, a remarkable archaeological site and quaint town nestled in the Urubamba Valley of Cusco, Peru. The image showcases the intricate cyclopean stonework, a distinctive architectural feature of Incan construction, which is evident in the grand walls and structures that dominate the landscape. Ollantaytambo, dating back to the Inca Empire, was once the royal estate of Emperor Pachacuti, who conquered the region and built the town and ceremonial center around 1450 AD. The site's strategic defensive position made it an essential stronghold during the resistance led by Manco Inca Yupanqui against the Spanish Conquest in the late 1500s. The photograph, taken in the 1910s, reveals the awe-inspiring dry-stone walls, which were meticulously crafted without the use of mortar, showcasing the Inca's exceptional masonry skills. The windows, with their unique holes, are an essential aspect of the design, allowing for the circulation of air and light while maintaining the structure's integrity. The ruins of Ollantaytambo, with its rich history and architectural marvels, continue to captivate visitors and scholars alike, offering a glimpse into the fascinating past of the Inca civilization and their remarkable achievements in construction and engineering.
