William Tyndale (c. 1492-1536). Statue of the English theologian and bible translator William Tyndale. Tyndales was the first English translation to draw directly from Hebrew and Greek texts, and the first to take advantage of the new medium of print. This allowed for its wide distribution. It was pronounced heretical in England, so his Bibles were smuggled into the country in bales of cloth. Those discovered owning them were punished. However, his efforts were met with hostility in England, where owning his Bibles was considered heretical. To circumvent this persecution, these precious books were smuggled into the country hidden within bales of cloth. The punishment for possessing Tyndale's translated Bibles escalated over time - initially resulting in book destruction but eventually leading to individuals being burned at the stake as heretics. Tragically, Tyndale himself faced this fate in 1536.
