William Tyndale, English theologian

William Tyndale (c. 1492-1536). Statue of the English theologian and bible translator William Tyndale. Tyndales was the first English translation to draw directly from Hebrew and Greek texts, and the first to take advantage of the new medium of print. This allowed for its wide distribution. It was pronounced heretical in England, so his Bibles were smuggled into the country in bales of cloth. Those discovered owning them were punished. At first only the books were destroyed, but soon heretics were burned too - including Tyndale himself in 1536. Photographed on the Victoria Embankment, London, UK

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the statue of William Tyndale, an influential English theologian and bible translator. Known for his groundbreaking work in translating the Bible directly from Hebrew and Greek texts, Tyndale's translation became widely distributed thanks to the advent of printing technology. However, his efforts were met with hostility in England, where owning his Bibles was considered heretical. To circumvent this persecution, these precious books were smuggled into the country hidden within bales of cloth. The punishment for possessing Tyndale's translated Bibles escalated over time - initially resulting in book destruction but eventually leading to individuals being burned at the stake as heretics. Tragically, Tyndale himself faced this fate in 1536. Photographed against the backdrop of Victoria Embankment in London, UK, this image showcases a significant figure from history who played a pivotal role during a tumultuous period marked by religious reformations and language development. The sculpture serves as a reminder of Tyndale's enduring legacy as both a scholar and reformer. With its rich historical context and powerful symbolism, this photograph offers viewers an opportunity to reflect on the profound impact that one individual can have on society through their unwavering dedication to their beliefs.
