Spinal nerve ganglion, light micrograph

Spinal nerve ganglion. Light micrograph of a cross-section through a spinal nerve ganglion. This is a node of nerve cells located just outside the spinal cord at the point where it is joined by the spinal nerves that branch off from the spinal cord. This collection of nerve cells (neurones, pink, round) is responsible for processing sensory information or for coordinating impulses from other neurones. Each neurone has a nucleus (centre, not seen in all of them) and is surrounded by flattened support cells (purple) called glial cells or satellite cells. This is one of the dorsal root ganglions, where a dorsal (back) nerve joins the spinal cord. Magnification: x2500 when printed 10 centimetres wide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a cross-section of a spinal nerve ganglion, revealing the intricate network of nerve cells responsible for processing sensory information and coordinating impulses. Located just outside the spinal cord, this node serves as a vital junction where spinal nerves branch off from the central nervous system. The collection of pink, round neurones seen here play a crucial role in transmitting signals throughout the body. In this image, each neurone is encased by flattened support cells called glial cells or satellite cells, represented by their striking purple hue. The nucleus of each neurone can be observed at the center, although not visible in all instances. This particular dorsal root ganglion represents one of many points where back nerves join with the spinal cord. With a magnification level of x2500 when printed 10 centimeters wide, this light micrograph offers an up-close look at the microscopic details within our bodies. It provides valuable insights into cell biology and human anatomy while shedding light on neurology and the functioning of our neural pathways. This remarkable visual representation invites us to appreciate both the complexity and beauty found within our own bodies – reminding us that even on such small scales, there is still much to discover about ourselves and how we perceive the world around us.
