EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the 16th century, showcasing French colonists in the Montreal region of Canada. The artwork, created by Andre Thevet, a renowned French explorer and writer, depicts these intrepid hunters utilizing snowshoes as they navigate the wintry landscape in search of animals. This scene offers a glimpse into the early years of French colonization in Canada. The woodcut from chapter III of book XXIII in Thevet's Cosmographie universelle (1575) is part of an extensive work that delves into the history and geography of lands explored by Thevet himself. With over 1000 pages divided into 23 books, this masterpiece provides invaluable insights into various aspects of exploration during that era. In this monochrome illustration, we witness European men armed with bows and arrows, spears, and other weapons as they engage in hunting activities. A stag stands as their potential prey while boars roam nearby. It is a testament to both human ingenuity and our primal instinct for survival. Todd-White Art Photography has beautifully captured this historical moment frozen in time. Through their lens, we are transported to an era when nature was both friend and foe for those who dared venture into its icy embrace. This print serves as a reminder of our rich heritage and the courage it took to forge new colonies amidst harsh conditions.
