Following the dissolution of the personal union with Sweden, Haakon, born Christian Frederik Carl Georg Valdemar Axel as Prince of Denmark and Iceland, embarked on a journey to Kristiania (now Oslo) aboard the Norwegian Naval ship Heimdal. The crowds gathered at the port and harbor eagerly awaited the arrival of their new monarch. Two days later, on November 27, Haakon took the oath as the first King of independent Norway.
