EDITORS COMMENTS
This postcard photograph captures a historic moment in Norwegian history: the arrival of King Haakon VII and his new Royal Family in Oslo on November 25, 1905. Following the dissolution of the personal union with Sweden, Haakon, born Christian Frederik Carl Georg Valdemar Axel as Prince of Denmark and Iceland, embarked on a journey to Kristiania (now Oslo) aboard the Norwegian Naval ship Heimdal. The crowds gathered at the port and harbor eagerly awaited the arrival of their new monarch. Two days later, on November 27, Haakon took the oath as the first King of independent Norway. The image of the Royal Family disembarking from the ship, surrounded by waving Norwegian flags, symbolizes the beginning of a new era in Norwegian history. This postcard is a precious reminder of the celebrations and jubilation that marked this momentous occasion.
