Coronation journey of King Haakon VII

The arrival in Oslo of Haakon VII (Prince Carl of Denmark and Iceland, born Christian Frederik Carl Georg Valdemar Axel - 18721957), the first king of Norway after the 1905 dissolution of the personal union with Sweden. The new Royal Family of Norway arrived at Kristiania (Oslo) in the Norwegian Naval ship 'Heimdal' early on the morning of 25 November 1905. Two days later, Haakon took the oath as the Norwegian King. Here is a postcard photograph of this momentous event! Date: 1905

The Oseberg ship (Norwegian: Osebergskipet) is a well-preserved Viking ship discovered in a large burial mound at the Oseberg farm near Tonsberg in Vestfold county, Norway. Excavated by Norwegian archaeologist Haakon Shetelig and Swedish archaeologist Gabriel Gustafson in 1904-1905. This ship is widely celebrated and has been called one of the finest finds to have survived the Viking Age. Date: circa 1905

Crown Prince Olav of Norway

Crown Prince Olav of Norway (1903-1991), later King Olav V of Norway, son of King Haakon VII and Queen Maud of Norway and grandson of King Edward VII. Olav was born a prince of Denmark and christened Alexander. He changed his name and nationality in 1905, when his father Prince Carl of Denmark was elected King of Norway. His mother was Princess Maud of Wales, youngest daughter of Edward VII. Olav was educated privately at first but later attended secondary school in Oslo, the first prince to attend an ordinary state school.
