Cucumber necrosis virus, computer model

Cucumber necrosis virus (CNV), computer model. This image was created using molecular modelling software and data from cryo-electron microscopy. The virus at top left shows the outer protein shell, known as the capsid, coloured by protein subunit. The cutaway view at lower right shows the outer shell (blue), an inner shell made of ribonucleic acid (purple) and a core made of protein (orange). CNV is transmitted by a fungus and infects cucumber plants, causing the leaves to discolour and wilt. Cryo-electron microscopes fire multi-angled beams of electrons at specimens that are kept at minus 150 degrees Celsius. The microscope collects slices of data that are reconstructed into 3-D models by computer

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a computer model of the Cucumber necrosis virus (CNV), created using advanced molecular modelling software and data obtained from cryo-electron microscopy. The image provides an intricate view of the virus, with the top left corner displaying its outer protein shell, known as the capsid, beautifully colored to represent different protein subunits. Meanwhile, in the lower right section, we are granted a cutaway perspective revealing additional layers: an outer blue shell, an inner ribonucleic acid (RNA) layer depicted in purple, and a core composed of protein shown in vibrant orange. CNV is transmitted through fungal agents and primarily targets cucumber plants. Its devastating effects include leaf discoloration and wilting. To capture this stunning visual representation, cryo-electron microscopes were employed to emit multi-angled beams of electrons onto specimens maintained at incredibly low temperatures (-150 degrees Celsius). These microscopes collected slices of data that were subsequently reconstructed into detailed 3-D models using sophisticated computer algorithms. The resulting image not only highlights the complex structure of CNV but also serves as a testament to the remarkable advancements made in structural biology and virology research. By unraveling such intricate details about plant pathogens like CNV through techniques such as cryoelectron microscopy and molecular imaging, scientists can better understand these viruses' mechanisms for improved disease management strategies. This visually striking photograph truly encapsulates both artistry and scientific innovation within its composition.
