EDITORS COMMENTS
This black and white lithograph, titled "What's that in the window?", is an enchanting illustration created by Peter Newell for Lewis Carroll's timeless classic, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. Published in 1901 as part of Harper and Brothers' edition of the book, this artwork beautifully captures the whimsical essence of Carroll's fantastical tale. In this scene, we find ourselves peering through a mysterious window into a world beyond our own. The intricate details bring to life Carroll's imaginative narrative as we witness Alice, our curious protagonist, falling down the rabbit hole into a realm filled with peculiar creatures and nonsensical adventures. Newell masterfully portrays the surreal atmosphere of Wonderland through his use of shading and perspective. The characters within this illustration are anthropomorphic beings who defy logic and challenge conventional understanding. This artistic interpretation perfectly encapsulates Carroll's intention to blur the boundaries between reality and fantasy. Alice's Adventures in Wonderland has become an iconic work of literature since its publication in 1865. Its enduring popularity can be attributed to its clever wordplay, memorable characters like the Cheshire Cat and Mad Hatter, and thought-provoking themes about identity, perception, and imagination. As we gaze upon this mesmerizing print today, it serves as a reminder of how Lewis Carroll’s extraordinary storytelling continues to captivate audiences across generations. It stands as one of many examples where artistry intertwines with literature to create something truly magical.
