Mountain hare (Lepus timidus). This species of hare is found across Northern Europe from Scandinavia to Siberia inhabiting moorland and mountainous areas. Small populations also exist in the British Isles including Scotland. Its fur is brown in the summer and moults to include white in the winter. It is largely solitary but may form groups of up to 70 individuals during harsh winters. It has a life span of up to ten years and can reach a length of 60cm and a weight of 4kg. A retail shop and dwellings above were seriously affected by a fire in Hare Street, London SE18, requiring additional fire engines to combat it. The van to the right is the Divisional Breathing Apparatus control van which attended fires where reinforcements were requested.
