EDITORS COMMENTS
This artwork titled "Early Cretaceous life" takes us back in time to the Barremian era, approximately 125-130 million years ago. Located in what is now the Wessex Formation on the Isle of Wight, UK, this scene depicts a diverse range of prehistoric creatures that once roamed these lands. In the foreground, two Iguanodon stand tall amidst a group of smaller Hypsilophodons. However, danger lurks nearby as a Goniopholis crocodile has caught one of the Hypsilophodons for its meal. A spiny Polocanthus can be seen feasting on plants in the lower left corner while a Baryonyx skillfully catches fish in the river. Above them all, Caulkichphalus and Istiodactylus pterosaurs gracefully fly through stormy skies. Across from them stands an imposing Brachiosaurus observing from afar. The artist's attention to detail brings this ancient world to life with vibrant colors and realistic depictions of flora and fauna. The lush forest teems with ferns and towering monkey puzzle trees (Araucaria), creating an immersive environment for these magnificent creatures. As lightning bolts illuminate the sky and set parts of the landscape ablaze, it becomes clear that survival was not easy during this tumultuous period marked by volcanic activity. This stunning illustration serves as a testament to our fascination with Earth's past inhabitants and offers us a glimpse into their existence millions of years ago.
