Thumb muscles, artwork C013 / 4587

Thumb muscles. Computer artwork of two of the muscles (red) of the thumb and their attachment to the bones of the hand. These are two of the three thenar muscles, and are the flexor pollicis brevis and abductor pollicis brevis muscle, with the latter seen above the former. Both originate from bones of the wrist, and attach to the first (proximal) phalanx of the thumb. These two muscles flex (bend) and abduct (move outwards) the thumb respectively. Also shown are the multiple ligaments (white) that hold together the bones of the wrist. The transverse ligaments connecting the distal ends of the metacarpals are also shown

EDITORS COMMENTS
This artwork, titled "Thumb Muscles" offers a detailed glimpse into the intricate anatomy of our hands. The computer-generated image showcases two of the three thenar muscles in vibrant red, highlighting their attachment to the bones of the hand. The flexor pollicis brevis and abductor pollicis brevis muscles take center stage, with the latter positioned above the former. Originating from bones in the wrist, these powerful thumb muscles play crucial roles in its movement. The flexor pollicis brevis muscle enables us to bend our thumbs, while its counterpart, the abductor pollicis brevis muscle, allows for outward movement. Together, they contribute to our dexterity and fine motor skills. The artwork also emphasizes multiple ligaments that hold together the bones of our wrists. These white connective tissues provide stability and support to this complex joint structure. Additionally showcased are transverse ligaments connecting distal ends of metacarpals – further illustrating how interconnected and interdependent our hand's components are. With meticulous attention to detail, this print invites viewers into a world where biology meets artistry. It serves as a reminder of both the beauty and complexity inherent within our bodies' anatomical structures – an awe-inspiring testament to human design and functionality.
