Sperm tails, TEM C014 / 1464

Sperm tails. Transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of sections through the tails of sperm (spermatozoa) cells at various levels. A sperms tails ability to move is partly due to the arrangement of microtubules (green central dots) within the tail. The microtubules are arranged in a central axoneme with two central single microtubules and nine peripheral double microtubules. Surrounding the microtubules are dense fibres, which provide rigidity and protection to the tail. Next is a layer of mitochondria (blue) which provide the energy for movement. Finally the tail is wrapped in a protective outer sheath. Magnification: x45, 000 when printed 10 centimetres wide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate structure of sperm tails, providing a fascinating glimpse into the world of reproductive biology. Taken using a transmission electron microscope (TEM), this image reveals sections through the tails of sperm cells at various levels. The key to a sperm's remarkable ability to move lies in its microtubules, which are represented by green central dots within the tail. These microtubules form a central axoneme consisting of two single microtubules surrounded by nine double microtubules. This arrangement provides both flexibility and strength necessary for efficient movement. To ensure protection and rigidity, dense fibers envelop the microtubules, acting as an outer shield for the delicate tail. Additionally, mitochondria can be seen in blue surrounding these fibers. These energy powerhouses provide fuel to propel the sperm forward on their journey towards fertilization. Finally, wrapping around all these components is a protective outer sheath that safeguards against external factors during reproduction. With its white background and central positioning, this print captures every intricate detail with precision and clarity. It serves as a reminder of nature's incredible design and highlights how each component plays an essential role in ensuring successful reproduction. This photograph is not just visually stunning but also holds immense educational value for those interested in cell biology or human anatomy.
