Sir Humphrey Gilbert, English explorer
Sir Humphrey Gilbert (c.1539-1583), English adventurer and explorer. Gilbert was born at Galmpton in Devon and was educated at Eton and Oxford University. He served in the Army during the plantations in Ireland in 1566, leading the seizure of large parts of the country. In 1570 he returned to England, married and became Member of Parliament for Plymouth. He was obsessed with finding a way to China through the famed north-west passage and in 1583 arrived in Newfoundland, claiming it and the land around it for the British crown. Gilbert died when his ship was lost in a storm on the journey home. This engraving first was published in Heroologia Anglica by Henry Holland, printed at Arnhem in 1620

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Sir Humphrey Gilbert, an influential English explorer and adventurer of the 16th century. Born in Galmpton, Devon, Gilbert received a remarkable education at Eton and Oxford University before embarking on his illustrious journey. His military service during the plantations in Ireland earned him recognition as he led successful seizures across vast territories. After returning to England in 1570, Gilbert married and became a Member of Parliament for Plymouth. However, his true passion lay in discovering a route to China through the legendary northwest passage. In 1583, he arrived in Newfoundland with great determination, claiming both the land and its surroundings for the British crown. Tragically, fate had other plans for this intrepid explorer. On his return voyage home, Gilbert's ship was lost amidst a violent storm that claimed his life. This engraving from Heroologia Anglica by Henry Holland captures Gilbert's spirit and legacy perfectly. Todd-White Art Photography has beautifully preserved this historical moment through their monochrome rendition of the engraved artwork from 1620. It serves as a reminder of Sir Humphrey Gilbert's unwavering dedication to exploration and discovery during an era defined by Elizabethan ambitions.
