Neck and head arteries, MRA scan C016 / 6449

Neck and head arteries. Coloured magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) scan of a normal carotid system of a 36 year old patient. At bottom right and left are the right and left subclavian arteries, which supply the arms. At bottom centre are the right and left common carotid arteries, which supply the neck. Each common carotid artery branches into the internal and external carotid arteries. The internal carotid arteries supply the brain, while the external carotid arteries supply the rest of the head. The internal carotid artery terminates at the circle of Willis (at eye level), which connects the arteries that supply the brain

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate network of neck and head arteries in a 36-year-old patient. The coloured magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) scan reveals the normal carotid system, providing valuable insights into the circulatory system. At the bottom right and left corners, we can observe the right and left subclavian arteries responsible for supplying blood to the arms. In the center, we find the right and left common carotid arteries that nourish the neck region. These common carotid arteries further branch out into internal and external carotid arteries. The internal carotid arteries play a crucial role by delivering oxygen-rich blood to our brain, while the external carotid arteries supply other areas of our head. Notably, this scan captures where these internal carotid arteries terminate at eye level in what is known as "the circle of Willis". This circular structure acts as an essential connection point between various brain-supplying arteries. With its black background highlighting vibrant colours representing different vessels, this image offers a visually stunning representation of our complex arterial anatomy. It serves as a testament to human biology's incredible intricacy while emphasizing healthy circulation within an adult body. This remarkable MRA scan was captured using advanced MRI technology by ZEPHYR/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY – not just any company but one renowned for their expertise in scientific imagery.
