Lavender leaf oil gland, SEM

Lavender leaf oil gland. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of an oil gland on the surface of a French lavender (Lavandula dentata) leaf. The gland is a secretory trichome (hair-like structure), which produces and stores the oil that gives lavender its distinctive fragrance. When the leaf is touched or damaged, the gland ruptures, releasing the oil and therefore the fragrance. A number of stomata (pores, oval) can also be seen in the background. Magnification: x630 when printed 10 centimetres wide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of a lavender leaf oil gland, captured through a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The vibrant colors and detailed structure of this secretory trichome, found on the surface of a French lavender leaf, are truly mesmerizing. Lavender is renowned for its distinctive fragrance, and this image reveals the source behind its aromatic allure. The oil gland acts as a storage unit for the essential oils that give lavender its enchanting scent. When the leaf is touched or damaged, these glands rupture, releasing the fragrant oil into the air. In addition to the oil gland, numerous stomata can be observed in the background of this image. These tiny oval pores play an important role in regulating gas exchange within plants. The magnification level used to capture this photograph was x630 when printed at 10 centimeters wide. This high-resolution image allows us to appreciate every minute detail of nature's design. As we delve into botany and explore flora from around the world, images like these remind us of how remarkable and diverse our natural world truly is. Through scientific exploration and advanced imaging techniques such as SEMs, we gain deeper insights into plant biology and uncover hidden wonders that would otherwise remain unseen.
