EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the replica of a remarkable cave painting from Lascaux II, known as C013 / 7384. The Chinese Horse figure depicted in this central gallery is a testament to the artistic prowess of Cro-Magnon man, an early European culture of modern humans. Created around 17,000 years ago using natural pigments such as red, brown, yellow ochre, and black manganese dioxide, these ancient paintings hold both religious and artistic significance. The original Lascaux cave was closed off to the public in 1963 due to preservation concerns. However, visitors can still marvel at its magnificence through the full-scale replica that opened nearby in 1983 - Lascaux II. This faithful reproduction allows us to delve into our Stone Age ancestors' world and gain insights into their cultural heritage. Photographed in 2010 by Philippe Psaila for Science Photo Library, this image captures not only the beauty of the artwork but also its historical value. It serves as a reminder of our shared past and highlights the importance of preserving such precious relics from our prehistoric roots. Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Lascaux remains an iconic symbol of human creativity and ingenuity during the Paleolithic era. As we explore this photograph's intricate details - from the vivid hues to every stroke on stone - we are transported back in time to witness humanity's earliest expressions through artistry and imagination.
