Gaspard Monge, French mathematician
Gaspard Monge (1746-1818), French mathematician. Monge is remembered as founder of descriptive geometry, the basis of modern engineering drawing, and for his work on the curvature of surfaces. He developed the theory of a class of equations now called Monge equations. He also tackled partial differential equations, the composition of nitrous acid, capillary phenomena, and the synthesis of water from hydrogen and oxygen. He was an active supporter of Napoleon and became Minister of the Navy in 1792. Engraving from Les Savants Modernes (1899)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving showcases the esteemed Gaspard Monge, a prominent figure in French mathematics during the 18th and 19th centuries. Known as the founder of descriptive geometry, Monge revolutionized engineering drawing with his groundbreaking work. His contributions extended beyond this field, as he delved into various scientific pursuits such as studying surface curvature, partial differential equations, capillary phenomena, and even synthesizing water from hydrogen and oxygen. Monge's brilliance was not limited to academia; he actively supported Napoleon Bonaparte and eventually assumed the role of Minister of the Navy in 1792. This historical illustration captures his profile with remarkable detail, emphasizing his intellectual prowess and distinguished appearance. The monochromatic aesthetic adds an air of elegance to this art piece while highlighting Monge's significant impact on both mathematics and chemistry. As a Caucasian man hailing from France during its Napoleonic era, Monge left an indelible mark on history through his mathematical theories known today as "Monge equations". Displayed within Science Photo Library's collection titled "Les Savants Modernes" (1899), this print serves as a testament to Gaspard Monge's enduring legacy as one of France's most influential mathematicians.
