Galileo Galilei, Italian astronomer
Galileo Galilei (1564-1642), Italian astronomer and physicist. Galileo was the first to successfully use a telescope to observe the heavens, discovering new stars, mountains on the Moon, and the phases of Venus. His discoveries supported the Copernican theory that the Sun, not the Earth, was at the centre of the solar system. This brought Galileo into conflict with the Roman Catholic Church and, in 1632, he was found guilty of heresy and was held under house arrest for the rest of his life

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the renowned Italian astronomer, Galileo Galilei. Known for his groundbreaking discoveries in the 17th century, Galileo revolutionized our understanding of the universe. With a telescope as his tool, he gazed into the heavens and unlocked secrets that had eluded humanity for centuries. Galileo's observations shattered conventional beliefs at the time, supporting Copernicus' theory that the Sun was at the center of our solar system. His meticulous scrutiny revealed new stars dotting an infinite expanse, mountains adorning Earth's moon, and even unveiled Venus' mesmerizing phases. However, these revolutionary findings placed him in direct conflict with the powerful Roman Catholic Church. Accused of heresy by challenging long-held religious doctrines, Galileo faced persecution during his lifetime. In 1632, he was found guilty and sentenced to house arrest until his death. This remarkable illustration captures not only Galileo's scientific brilliance but also serves as a poignant reminder of how knowledge can challenge established norms and provoke controversy. Despite enduring censure from authorities who feared change, Galileo's legacy endures as a symbol of human curiosity and determination to uncover truth. Science Photo Library has masterfully preserved this historical artwork - an homage to one man's unwavering pursuit of knowledge amidst adversity - allowing us to reflect on both past triumphs and ongoing scientific revolutions that shape our world today.
