Extraction of fossil DNA C018 / 5404

Extraction of fossil DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid). Technicians extracting material from the fossilised bone of a cave bear (Ursus deningeri) found at the Sima de los Huesos site, Sierra de Atapuerca, Spain. The mitochondrial DNA was extracted and sequenced. The fossil is over 400, 000 years old, making it the oldest DNA sequence published to date (December 2013). The work was carried out in a collaboration between Centro Mixto de Evolucion y Comportamiento Humanos, Madrid, Spain, directed by Prof. Juan Luis Arsuaga and Svante Paabos department of genetics, Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the groundbreaking extraction of fossil DNA from a cave bear at the Sima de los Huesos site in Sierra de Atapuerca, Spain. The dedicated technicians are seen meticulously extracting material from the fossilized bone, which belongs to an Ursus deningeri species that lived over 400,000 years ago. This remarkable discovery makes it the oldest DNA sequence ever published as of December 2013. The collaboration between Centro Mixto de Evolucion y Comportamiento Humanos in Madrid, Spain, led by Prof. Juan Luis Arsuaga and Svante Paabo's department of genetics at Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany was instrumental in this groundbreaking research. Their joint efforts allowed for the successful extraction and sequencing of mitochondrial DNA from this ancient specimen. In this image, we witness a momentous scientific achievement that sheds light on our prehistoric past. The preserved sample being carefully extracted represents a crucial step towards understanding our genetic history and evolution as humans. Through meticulous drilling and sampling techniques carried out by these skilled individuals in their laboratory setting, they have unlocked valuable insights into the genome of this long-extinct creature. This photograph serves as a testament to human curiosity and determination to unravel mysteries buried deep within Earth's history. It showcases both the beauty of paleontology and genetics coming together to push boundaries and rewrite our understanding of life on Earth thousands of years ago.
