Coining, 19th century C015 / 6069

Coining. 19th-century artwork of workers manufacturing coins. The coins are being produced by a method involving stamping the coins from a soft metal, rather than casting from a molten metal. It is also called hammered coinage. Sheet metal of the correct type and thickness (centre) is placed between two dies (right). The upper die is then hit with a hammer to impress images on both sides of the coin. Artwork from London (Charles Knight, 1841)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the 19th century, offering a glimpse into the intricate process of coin manufacturing. The artwork showcases skilled workers diligently engaged in coining, a method that involves stamping coins from soft metal rather than casting them from molten metal. In this historical depiction, we witness the meticulous craftsmanship involved in creating currency. A sheet of precisely chosen and measured metal is carefully positioned between two dies at the center of the image. These dies serve as molds for imprinting images on both sides of each coin. With great precision and force, an adult male worker wields a hammer to strike the upper die, leaving an indelible mark on these pieces of wealth. This technological marvel known as hammered coinage revolutionized currency production during its time. The monochrome illustration captures not only the industrial setting but also highlights the human element behind this mechanical process. Each worker plays a vital role in transforming raw materials into valuable coins that would soon circulate throughout Britain and Europe. This remarkable artwork originated from London's Charles Knight in 1841, providing us with a window into British history and their contribution to monetary systems worldwide. As we gaze upon this image, we are reminded of how far technology has advanced since then while appreciating the ingenuity and dedication required to produce such essential elements of our economy.
