Chest muscle, artwork C013 / 4561

Chest muscle. Computer artwork of an oblique anterior view of one of the muscles (red) of the chest and shoulders and its attachment to the bones of the back and ribcage. This is the pectoralis minor muscle, which runs from the third to fifth ribs to the coracoid process of the scapula. Used to pull the shoulder downwards, this muscle is smaller than and lies under the pectoralis major muscle (not shown). Also shown here are the bones of the ribcage and spine, and the clavicles (collar bones) across the top of the torso. Down the centre of the ribcage, the costal cartilages (pale) enable the chest to expand during breathing. EDITORS COMMENTS

This print showcases the intricate details of the chest muscle, specifically the pectoralis minor muscle. In this computer artwork, an oblique anterior view allows us to appreciate the connection between this muscle and the bones of the back and ribcage. The vibrant red color emphasizes its presence amidst a sea of bones. The pectoralis minor muscle plays a crucial role in pulling down the shoulder, contributing to our overall range of motion. Although smaller than its counterpart, the pectoralis major muscle (not shown), it lies beneath it and adds depth to our chest muscles. The illustration also highlights other essential components of our musculoskeletal system. We can observe the ribs and spine forming a protective cage around vital organs within our thoracic cavity. The clavicles or collarbones gracefully arch across the top of the torso, connecting with both shoulders. Moreover, pale costal cartilages running along the center enable expansion during breathing – a reminder of how intricately designed our bodies are for optimal functioning. This image is not just an artistic representation; it serves as a valuable tool for anatomical study and understanding human biology. It offers insight into normal anatomy while showcasing healthy musculature in great detail from an angled perspective. Overall, this visually stunning artwork provides us with a glimpse into one aspect of human anatomy that often goes unnoticed but is undeniably vital for proper movement and functionality.
