Bronze Age bone punches C015 / 6757
Bronze Age bone punches. These tools, also called awls or perforators, were tapered and worked pieces of bone used to punch holes in animal skins or leather when making clothes. These bone punches, found in 2004, are from the Portalon cave (the entrance cave) to the Cueva Mayor, a cave in the Sierra de Atapuerca foothills near Burgos, Spain. Bone punches have been found in this cave at the Early Bronze Age level, dating to around 1690 BC. The limestone caves in these hills, containing many prehistoric fossils and artefacts, have been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a pair of Bronze Age bone punches, also known as awls or perforators. These meticulously crafted tools were expertly tapered and made from bone, serving the purpose of punching holes in animal skins or leather during the creation of garments. Discovered in 2004 within the Portalon cave, which acts as the entrance to Cueva Mayor in the Sierra de Atapuerca foothills near Burgos, Spain, these bone punches date back to approximately 1690 BC. The limestone caves found in this region are not only home to an abundance of prehistoric fossils but have also been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This particular photograph was taken against a black background in a studio setting, allowing for clear focus on these archaeological treasures. With its rich historical significance and anthropological value, this image serves as a testament to our ancestors' ingenuity and resourcefulness during the Early Bronze Age. It offers us a glimpse into their daily lives and provides valuable insights into ancient textile production techniques. Displayed with precision and care within museums worldwide, these bone punches stand as tangible reminders of our shared human heritage. The attention to detail captured by Javier Trueba's lens invites viewers to appreciate both the beauty and functionality embodied within these artifacts from centuries past.
