White matter fibres, brain mri scan C018 / 6386
White matter fibres overlaid a mri scan of the human head. Computer enhanced 3D diffusion spectral imaging (DSI) scan of the bundles of white matter nerve fibres in the brain. The fibres transmit nerve signals between brain regions and between the brain and the spinal cord. Diffusion spectrum imaging (DSI) is a variant of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in which a magnetic field maps the water contained in neuron fibers, thus mapping their criss-crossing patterns. A similar technique called diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) is also used to explore neural data of white matter fibres in the brain. Both methods allow mapping of their orientations and the connections between brain regions. Data/software: NIH Human Connectome Project /humanconnectomeproject.org)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate network of white matter fibres within the human brain. Through computer-enhanced 3D diffusion spectral imaging (DSI), this magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan reveals the mesmerizing criss-crossing patterns of nerve bundles that transmit vital signals between different regions of the brain and even to the spinal cord. The cutting-edge technique used in this image, known as diffusion spectrum imaging (DSI), employs a powerful magnetic field to map water molecules contained within these neuron fibers. By doing so, it unveils their orientations and connections, allowing for a comprehensive understanding of how information flows through our brains. Similar to DSI, another method called diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) is also employed to explore neural data related to white matter fibres. Both techniques play an integral role in mapping out the complex pathways that enable communication between various brain regions. This remarkable visual representation has been made possible by utilizing data and software from the NIH Human Connectome Project. It serves as a testament to humanity's continuous efforts in unraveling the mysteries of our most intricate organ – the human brain.
