Portrait of James Watt (1736-1819)

Portrait of James Watt (1736-1819) after a portrait by Carl Frederik von Breda. Scottish engineer & inventor, Watt made numerous practical improvements to the steam engine of his day. By 1790 the superior Watt steam engine had completely replaced the older Newcomen variety. His inventions included the double acting engine where the piston is made to both push & pull (1782); the centrifugal governor, a device that controlled a process by means of variations in the process itself (1788); & the pressure gauge (1790). Watt also coined the term " horsepower" to describe a unit of energy. Watts innovations, coupled with the business acumen of his partner Matthew Boulton, made him financially successful

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the remarkable portrait of James Watt, a Scottish engineer and inventor who revolutionized the steam engine during the 18th century. The original painting was skillfully crafted by Carl Frederik von Breda, capturing Watt's intellectual prowess and visionary spirit. Watt's contributions to engineering were nothing short of extraordinary. By introducing practical improvements to the steam engine, he rendered the older Newcomen variety obsolete by 1790. His groundbreaking inventions included the double acting engine, which allowed for both pushing and pulling motions of the piston in 1782. Another significant creation was his centrifugal governor, a device that ingeniously controlled processes through variations within those very processes in 1788. Additionally, Watt developed the pressure gauge in 1790 - an essential tool still used today. Not only did Watt possess exceptional technical skills, but he also possessed business acumen alongside his partner Matthew Boulton. This combination led him to achieve financial success while leaving an indelible mark on history as one of Scotland's greatest pioneers. It is worth noting that it was James Watt himself who coined the term "horsepower" to describe a unit of energy - a testament to his innovative thinking and influence on modern physics. This vibrant colored illustration serves as a tribute to this brilliant scientist and engineer whose technological innovations continue to shape our world today.
