Myelinated nerve fibres, light micrograph C016 / 0531
Myelinated nerve fibres. Light micrograph of a section through a spinal sensory nerve containing many closely packed axons exhibiting a wave-type appearance. The green stain represents the axons themselves and their covering of myelin, the fatty-rich tissue sheath that facilitates rapid conduction of nerve impulses essential in most neural sensory systems. Myelin sheaths are produced by Schwann cells whose nuclei can be seen in large numbers along the nerve fibres. Schwann cells are not neurons but provide essential structural and functional support for the nerves with which they are intimately associated. Magnification: x180, when printed 10 centimetres high

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of myelinated nerve fibres, providing a glimpse into the complex world of our neural sensory systems. The image, captured using a light microscope, depicts a section through a spinal sensory nerve that is brimming with closely packed axons exhibiting a mesmerizing wave-like pattern. The vibrant green stain represents both the axons themselves and their protective covering of myelin - a fatty-rich tissue sheath crucial for facilitating rapid conduction of nerve impulses. This myelin sheath plays an essential role in most neural sensory systems within the human body. A multitude of Schwann cells can be observed along the nerve fibres, as evidenced by their numerous nuclei. Although not neurons themselves, these Schwann cells are indispensable in providing structural and functional support to the nerves they intimately associate with. With a magnification level of x180 when printed at 10 centimetres high, this image allows us to appreciate the microscopic details that underlie our biological makeup. It offers insights into cell biology and cytology while also highlighting key anatomical features such as nuclei and histological structures. Through this remarkable visual representation from MICROSCAPE/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY, we gain further appreciation for the complexity and beauty inherent in even the smallest components of our bodies.
