EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the powerful force of Extratropical Storm Katia as it approached the United Kingdom in September 2011. The image, taken by the Second Generation Meteosat weather satellite and processed by the Dundee Satellite Receiving Station, showcases the remains of Hurricane Katia transforming into an extratropical storm. The clouds at the upper center represent the core of this former hurricane and tropical storm, which had traversed across the vast Atlantic Ocean and now loomed just west of northern Scotland. With North positioned at the top, one can appreciate both its beauty and potential danger. As this meteorological phenomenon unfolded, gale-force winds and heavy rainfall were predicted for Scotland and northern England in subsequent days. The image serves as a reminder of nature's immense power to shape our environment. The photograph also highlights how Earth observation satellites play a crucial role in monitoring severe weather events from space. It is through such technological advancements that scientists are able to gather valuable data on storms like Katia, aiding in forecasting efforts and providing essential information for disaster preparedness. In this snapshot from Science Photo Library's collection, we witness a moment frozen in time - a testament to humanity's ongoing quest to understand our planet's intricate atmospheric processes while appreciating their awe-inspiring beauty.
