Enkianthus flower, SEM

Enkianthus flower. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the reproductive structures inside an Enkianthus perulatus flower. The female structure (pistil) can be seen at centre, surrounded by the male reproductive structures (stamens, pink). Pollen grains are the male sex cells of a flowering plant. When one lands on the female pistil it sprouts a pollen tube that burrows down to reach the ovary, where it fertilises the ovum (egg cell)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of an Enkianthus flower, captured through a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The false-colored image reveals the reproductive structures hidden within this delicate blossom. At the center, we can observe the pistil, which represents the female part of the flower. Surrounding it are numerous stamens, distinguished by their pink hue, representing the male reproductive structures. Pollen grains, depicted as tiny spheres in this image, play a crucial role in plant reproduction. These male sex cells are responsible for fertilizing the ovum or egg cell found within the pistil. When a pollen grain lands on the pistil's stigma, it sprouts a pollen tube that navigates its way down to reach and fertilize the ovary. The level of detail captured in this SEM image allows us to appreciate nature's complexity at a microscopic scale. Each component - from filaments to anthers and pollen grains - contributes to successful pollination and subsequent plant growth. Science Photo Library has once again provided us with an awe-inspiring glimpse into botanical wonders that often go unnoticed by our naked eyes. This photograph serves as both a testament to scientific exploration and an artistic celebration of nature's diversity and ingenuity.
