Bee pollinating a flower, artwork

Bee pollinating a flower. Sequence of artworks showing how a bee (left) lands on a flower to drink nectar (centre left), brushing up against the pollen-bearing anthers. As the bee moves around, the pollen grains (purple spheres) are transferred (pink arrow, centre) to the carpel (stigma and style) of the flower. The carpel is sectioned in the third and fourth artworks, with a pollen tube growing downwards (second pink arrow) to reach the flower's ovary and fertilise the ovule (brown). This forms seeds (red, fourth artwork) for a new plant (fourth artwork). The fifth (sectioned) and sixth (non-sectioned) artworks show the fruit (red) that forms around the seeds

Coloured SEM of sunflower pollen grains

Pollen grains. Coloured Scanning Electron Micro- graph of pollen grains of the sunflower, Helianthus annuus. Pollen grain size, shape and surface texture differ from one plant species to another. The outer walls (exine) of these pollen grains are covered with spikes which allow them to catch on the bodies of insects, aiding cross- pollination. The form of the pollen grain wall is also used by botanists to identify plant species. Pores in the pollen wall help in water regulation and germination. Pollen grains contain the plant's male gametes which fertilise the female egg (ovule) to produce a seed. Pollen also causes hay fever. Magnification: x1, 125 at 5x7cm size. x3, 800 at 10x8ins

Pollen corona Featured Image

Pollen corona

Pollen corona. Pine tree branch in front of a corona (luminous disk) around the Moon. A corona is an optical atmospheric effect, which in this case has been caused by a high concentration of pine tree pollen in the atmosphere. Coronas consist of one or more rings, some of which may be coloured, around the Sun or Moon. They are caused by the diffraction of light by particles in the air, most commonly small water droplets in clouds. This corona's elliptical shape is thought to be due to the pollen's non-spherical shape. Photographed in Finland
