EDITORS COMMENTS
The print captures a significant moment in history, depicting the Surrender of the King of France at Poitiers in September 1356. John II, also known as John the Good, was the monarch of the House of Valois and ruled as King of France from 1350 until his death. During the ongoing conflict known as the Hundred Years' War, Edward the Black Prince led an army through France, with John in pursuit. The two forces clashed south of Poitiers, resulting in John's capture and subsequent surrender by offering his glove. This image is taken from "British Battles on Land and Sea" by James Grant and published around 1880. It showcases not only historical figures but also provides a glimpse into medieval warfare tactics and attire. The scene portrays men on horseback wielding weapons such as swords and arrows while wearing distinctive clothing indicative of their respective ranks. The photograph serves as a reminder of this pivotal event that shaped European history during the fourteenth century. It highlights both military strategy and political power dynamics between England and France at that time. This visual documentation allows us to reflect upon past conflicts while appreciating how far we have come since then.
