D-Day - Landing in France - Omaha Beach

American assault troops prepare to disembark their landing craft as it approaches the beach head, Omaha Beach. The smoke visible in the background attests to the massive naval artillery assault, supporting the landing. Snakes of troops wind their way up the beach. D-Day began on June 6th, 1944 at 6:30am and was conducted in two assault phases - the air assault landing of allied troops followed by an amphibious assault by infantry. The Normandy landings were the largest single-day amphibious actions ever undertaken, involving close to 400, 000 military and naval personnel"

Australian troops counter-attack at Amiens, WW1

Australian troops hold the line at Villers Bretonneux nine miles east of Amiens during a German attack during the Battle of Amiens in April 1918. The image was an accurate impression by Sphere special artist, Fortunino Matania, having been reconstructed with the help of eyewitness accounts and official material. In the foreground, an infantryman, his rifle slung over his shoulder, takes over a Lewis Gun whose crew had been put out of action. Behind that can be seen another soldier hitting a German with his tin helmet (having already strangled another with his bare hands) while a third German attempts to flee down a railway cutting but is stopped by the gun fire of the Australian officer's batman. Date: 1919

Natal Native Contingent (NCC) armed with assegais Featured Image

Natal Native Contingent (NCC) armed with assegais

Photograph of members of the Natal Native Contingent (NCC) armed with assegais (short spears) and shields, 1879 (c). The NNC was formed in 1878 to bolster the defences of the British colony of Natal. Most recruits came from the Basuto and Mponso tribes. NNC troops wore their traditional tribal apparel with a red cloth bandanna around their foreheads, the only item to distinguish them from Zulu warriors who were traditional enemies of the Basuto and Mponso. Natal?s white population had long feared that arming the black population would constitute a security risk, and as a result only a small percentage of NNC soldiers were issued with guns. These were obsolete muzzle-loading muskets rather than modern rifles. Soldiers issued with firearms were only given four rounds of ammunition at any one time. Most NNC soldiers fought with traditional African weapons during the Anglo-Zulu War (1879). From album of 70 photographs, associated with Zulu War (1879). Associated with Col Hume, 94th Regiment of Foot. Date: 1879
