Fort Nottich, Bomarsund - Breach made by an English Three-gun Battery - from a sketch by... 1854. Creator: Unknown

Fort Nottich, Bomarsund - Breach made by an English Three-gun Battery - from a sketch by O.W. Brierly, 1854. Crimean War: view of the Russian-held Notvik Tower and Prasto Tower in Finland, after bombardment by the Royal Navy. The principal object in the view is Nottich, the northern fort of Bomarsund, showing the breach made by...three 32-pounders, worked by English blue-jackets and marine artillery, under command of Captain Ramsay of the Hogue...from the position of English guns upon a hill, about 800 yards to the westward of the fort: it shows what three ship's guns, worked by our men behind sand-bags did against the dreaded Russian stone walls in a few hours. The Sketch is one of more importance than appears at first glance, as it bears upon the question of English guns versus granite walls'. From "Illustrated London News", 1854

EDITORS COMMENTS
Fort Nottich, Bomarsund: A Testament to English Artillery during the Crimean War This print depicts the breach made by an English three-gun battery at Fort Nottich, Bomarsund, in Finland, during the Crimean War in 1854. The sketch, created by Oswald Walters Brierly, showcases the Notvik Tower and Prasto Tower in the aftermath of a relentless bombardment by the Royal Navy. The principal focus of the image is Fort Nottich, the northern fortification of Bomarsund, which displays the impressive breach created by three 32-pounders, skillfully operated by English blue-jackets and marine artillery, under the command of Captain Ramsay of the Hogue. The vantage point of the English guns, situated approximately 800 yards to the westward of the fort, offers a striking contrast between the power of the English artillery and the seemingly invincible Russian stone walls. This sketch holds greater significance than initially perceived, as it contributes to the ongoing debate regarding the effectiveness of English guns against granite fortifications. The Illustrated London News, in which this print was published, emphasizes the importance of this image in highlighting the remarkable achievements of the English forces during the Crimean War. The ruins of the Notvik Tower and Prasto Tower stand as a testament to the intensity of the naval battle that unfolded in the Baltic Sea. The print offers a glimpse into the strategic importance of territorial occupation and the role of artillery in shaping the outcome of military conflicts. This image serves as a reminder of the pivotal role that the Crimean War played in shaping the course of European history.
