The Crimean War was a conflict fought from October 1853 to February 1856 between the Russian Empire and an alliance of the Ottoman Empire, France, Britain and Sardinia. The war began as a result of the Russian Empire's expansion into the territories around the Black Sea. The primary theatre of war was on the Crimean Peninsula in what is now Ukraine. During this conflict, Russia lost control over much of its southern territories to its allies. British and French forces were able to capture Sevastopol after a lengthy siege, which ultimately led to Russia's defeat in this war. This conflict also saw significant advances in military technology such as ironclad ships and improved artillery pieces which would later be used during World War I. Ultimately, this war resulted in significant losses for both sides with no clear victor emerging from it; however, it did lead to increased tensions between European powers that would eventually culminate in World War I some 60 years later.
