Artillery is a type of heavy military weapon used to fire large projectiles over long distances, and is typically mounted on a vehicle or towed by one, and can be used in both offensive and defensive operations. Artillery has been around since the Middle Ages, when it was first used to bombard castles with stones and other projectiles. Today, artillery includes cannons, howitzers, mortars, rocket launchers and missiles.
