EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a Brussels allegorical tapestry depicting the enchanting month of December. Created by Bernaert van Orley and his circle around 1525, this magnificent artwork measures an impressive 366x422 cm and is currently held in a private collection. Woven with meticulous detail using wool and silk, the tapestry portrays various scenes that symbolize the essence of December. In the center, we witness a butcher and his helper engaged in the blood-letting of a boar, accompanied by a woman. To their left, two boys hold torches while conversing with their maid and her master and mistress. On the right side, a group gathers around a warming fire. Above these scenes stands the personification of December inscribed as FOLUS, surrounded by playful putti blowing winds amidst clouds and snowfall. The background features intricate buildings adding depth to this winter tableau. The corners are adorned with foliated masks featuring ram-horns, lions, snails, and garlands of ribbon-tied flowers and fruits. Notably restored over time due to light silks and brown wools; however, its grandeur remains intact. It is believed that an artist from Bernard van Orley's circle drew these remarkable cartoons for weaving this masterpiece. This stunning photograph captured by Bridgeman Images allows us to appreciate every intricate detail within this Flemish artwork that beautifully captures the spirit of December through its rich symbolism.
