This print showcases a remarkable Brussels allegorical tapestry depicting the month of December. Created around 1525 by Bernaert van Orley or an artist from his circle, this wool and silk masterpiece is part of The Medallion Months series. The central scene portrays the blood-letting of a boar by a butcher, assisted by his helper and a woman. To the left, two boys hold torches while conversing with their maid and her master and mistress. On the right side, a group gathers around a cozy fire. Above them all stands December personified as FOLUS, surrounded by mischievous wind-blowing putti against a backdrop of snowy clouds. The intricate details extend beyond the main composition to include various buildings in the background. In each corner of the circular frame are additional symbolic elements: Aquilon, personification of the North Wind with bellows; a bearded man; an owl amidst other birds in one corner; and in another corner, a man and woman capturing birds in bags and cages. Delicate ribbon-tied garlands adorned with flowers and fruits grace the border while foliated masks featuring ram-horns, lions, and snails occupy each corner. Although some restorations have been made to preserve its beauty over time, this photograph allows us to appreciate every nuance captured within this historical tapestry's design.
