Sredinnyy Khrebet volcanoes, radar image

Sredinnyy Khrebet volcanoes. Coloured three- dimensional computer map of the Sredinnyy Khrebet volcanoes in Kamchatka Peninsula, Russia. North is at top. The topography of the region was mapped by the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) on the Space Shuttle Endeavour, using reflected radar pulses. Colour-coding reveals elevation: green is lowest, rising through yellow, red and pink to white, the highest. The Sredinnyy Khrebet range dominates the region. Volcanic lava has smoothed the rugged terrain around the highest peaks (white, lower centre). SRTM is run by NASA, the USAs National Imagery and Mapping Agency (NIMA), and the German and Italian space agencies

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning print captures the majestic beauty of the Sredinnyy Khrebet volcanoes in Kamchatka Peninsula, Russia. The image, a coloured three-dimensional computer map created by the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM), showcases the remarkable topography of this volcanic region. With north at the top, the elevation is revealed through a colour-coded scheme: green represents lower areas, while yellow, red, pink and white depict progressively higher altitudes. The Sredinnyy Khrebet range stands out dominantly in this landscape. Its peaks are smoothed by volcanic lava flows that have shaped and transformed the rugged terrain around them. This visual spectacle provides an awe-inspiring glimpse into Earth's geological wonders. Conducted jointly by NASA, USA's National Imagery and Mapping Agency (NIMA), as well as German and Italian space agencies, SRTM utilized reflected radar pulses to accurately map this area from space. The mission aimed to create detailed topographic maps for scientific research purposes. This particular photo was taken in February 2000 during one of Endeavour Space Shuttle's missions. It highlights not only the active nature of these Russian volcanoes but also showcases their immense dimensions and geographical significance. Science Photo Library has expertly captured this breathtaking scene with its intricate details and vibrant colours. Whether you're fascinated by geography or simply appreciate natural beauty, this print is sure to captivate your imagination and transport you to one of Earth's most extraordinary landscapes.
