Historical artwork of the constellation of Libra

Libra. Coloured historical artwork of the constellation of Libra. The constellation is depicted as a balance. Libra is the seventh sign of the Zodiac. The Sun is in Libra between 23 September and 22 October. It is an inconspicuous constellation with no bright stars, and is overshadowed somewhat by Scorpius (to its left). In ancient times, the stars of Libra used to represent the claws of the scorpion, and only became represented as a balance during Roman times. This artwork is based on a sky map by the Polish-German astronomer Johannes Hevelius (1611- 1687), which was published posthumously in 1690

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a stunning historical artwork of the constellation of Libra. In this colored depiction, Libra is portrayed as a delicate balance, representing the seventh sign of the Zodiac. The Sun graces this celestial territory between 23 September and 22 October each year. Although lacking prominent stars, Libra's beauty often goes unnoticed due to its proximity to Scorpius on its left. Interestingly, in ancient times, the stars that now form Libra were believed to represent the scorpion's claws. However, it was during Roman times that they transformed into an emblematic balance symbolizing justice and harmony. The inspiration for this remarkable artwork originates from a sky map created by Johannes Hevelius, a renowned Polish-German astronomer who lived from 1611 to 1687. Published posthumously in 1690, his star map served as the foundation for this exquisite piece. With elements encompassing science, astronomy, artistry, cosmology and stellar wonders; this photograph offers a glimpse into our fascination with constellations and their significance within human history. It serves as a reminder of how ancient civilizations sought meaning in the vastness of our universe through storytelling and symbolism - forever capturing our imagination with their celestial tales.
