First solar-powered printing press, 1894

First solar-powered printing press, 1894. Historical artwork showing Frenchman Abel Pifres invention, a steam press powered by the Suns rays. When the rays hit the large dish-shaped mirror, they were reflected and focussed upon the boiler in the centre, which heated the water inside into steam. The steam drove an engine (left) which was coupled to a printing press, producing copies of a newspaper appropriately called The Sun. The machine was demonstrated in the Jardin des Tuileries, Paris, France. This artwork was printed in The Picture Magazine, 1894

EDITORS COMMENTS
This historical artwork showcases the groundbreaking invention of the first solar-powered printing press in 1894. Created by Frenchman Abel Pifres, this steam press harnessed the power of the Sun's rays to revolutionize the printing industry. The image depicts a large dish-shaped mirror that reflects and focuses sunlight onto a central boiler, generating steam through heating water. This steam then drives an engine on the left side of the machine, which is connected to a printing press. As a result, copies of a newspaper aptly named "The Sun" are produced. The demonstration took place in Paris' enchanting Jardin des Tuileries, capturing public fascination with this innovative technology during the Industrial Revolution era. This remarkable artwork not only highlights Pifres' engineering prowess but also emphasizes his commitment to renewable energy sources long before their widespread adoption. Through this illustration, we witness how human ingenuity and technological advancements intersected in 19th-century Europe. The image portrays an adult Caucasian male operating this intricate apparatus with precision and expertise. It serves as a testament to France's rich history in industrial innovation. With its depiction of solar power being utilized for environmentally friendly purposes well over a century ago, this print offers us an intriguing glimpse into our past while inspiring us towards sustainable solutions for our future.
