EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of Ely station in 1911. From the vantage point of the Station South signal box, we are presented with a panoramic view of the down platform. On the left side, one can observe the bustling goods and coal yard, where workers diligently load and unload cargo. Behind the platform fence, horse boxes stand ready to transport these majestic creatures to their destinations. In front of them, a Great Eastern Railway brake 3rd carriage and an open carriage truck await passengers eagerly. As our eyes wander further into this snapshot frozen in time, static petroleum tanks come into view at the rear end of the yard. These tanks serve as a reminder of how crucial fuel was for steam locomotives during this era. One cannot help but notice another interesting feature in this image - extensive use of sleeper decking strategically placed to facilitate horse shunting. This innovative technique showcases both practicality and efficiency in managing equine transportation within Ely station. Preserved by Imagination Works and now housed at National Railway Museum (NRM), this remarkable photograph transports us back over a century ago when steam locomotives ruled supreme on these tracks. It serves as a testament to our rich railway heritage while also reminding us that progress is inevitable in shaping future transport systems worldwide.
