EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait captures the distinguished visage of Sir Charles Shaw-Lefevre, Viscount Eversley (1794-1888), a prominent lawyer and statesman who served as Speaker of the House of Commons from 1857 to 1866. Shaw-Lefevre's impressive political career began in 1832 when he was elected as the Member of Parliament for Winchelsea. Over the next two decades, he held various positions in the government, including Under-Secretary of State for the Home Department and Solicitor General. Born on March 12, 1794, in London, Shaw-Lefevre was educated at Eton College and the Inner Temple. He was called to the bar in 1817 and began his legal practice. Shaw-Lefevre's political beliefs were deeply rooted in the Conservative Party, and he was known for his strong opposition to the Reform Bill of 1832. However, he later changed his stance and supported the bill, which expanded the franchise and reformed parliamentary representation. In 1857, Shaw-Lefevre was appointed as Speaker of the House of Commons, a position he held until 1866. As Speaker, he presided over the House with impartiality and fairness, earning the respect of members from all parties. Shaw-Lefevre's tenure as Speaker was marked by several significant events, including the passage of the Reform Act of 1867 and the debates surrounding the Crimean War. After leaving the Speakership, Shaw-Lefevre continued to serve in various capacities in the government until his retirement from politics in 1885. He died on March 19, 1888, at the age of 94, leaving behind a legacy as a respected lawyer, statesman, and Speaker of the House of Commons. This portrait, taken during his tenure as Speaker, captures the wisdom, dignity, and authority that defined Shaw-Lefevre's career in politics.
