EDITORS COMMENTS
1. The First Page of the Famous Vienna Codex of the Golden Bull: A Glimpse into Medieval Politics and Fashion The Vienna Codex of the Golden Bull, created in 1365, is an illuminated manuscript of great historical significance that was prepared for King Wenceslaus IV of Bohemia. This first page, adorned with intricate miniatures, is a testament to the grandeur and power of the Holy Roman Empire during the late Middle Ages. King Wenceslaus IV is depicted on horseback, dressed in the regal attire of the time, holding the symbols of his authority - the orb, sceptre, and throne. Surrounding him are the archbishops of Mainz, Bamberg, and Würtzburg, as well as the burgraves of Nuremberg, Frankfurt, and other prominent figures from the empire, including Trier and Cologne. The Vienna Codex of the Golden Bull is named after the Bull of Gold, a document issued by Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV in 1356, which defined the rights and privileges of the various territories within the empire. This first page serves as an illustration of the imperial election process and the assembly of the electors, who gathered to choose the new emperor. The miniatures in the Vienna Codex of the Golden Bull are handcoloured copperplate engravings, taken from Giulio Ferrario's Costumes Ancient and Modern of the Peoples of the World, published in Florence in 1844. These illustrations offer a fascinating glimpse into the historical fashion and social hierarchy of the medieval world. The Vienna Codex of the Golden Bull is a valuable historical document and an important work of art, showcasing the rich history and culture of the Holy Roman Empire during the late Middle Ages. Its intricate illustrations and detailed depictions of medieval attire continue to captivate scholars and enthusiasts alike.
